Altoists
Richie Cole and
Art Pepper only played together once; for this recording date in 1982. Teamed together by producer-writer
Herb Wong, they inspire each other, being both competitive and complementary.
Cole plays baritone on two selections (he should play it more often), sounding quite exuberant, and he switches to tenor on "A & R."
Pepper plays a bit of clarinet in addition to his alto. Backed by a powerhouse rhythm section that includes pianist
Roger Kellaway, the two saxophonists perform three
Cole originals,
Pepper's "Art Opus #2" and "Broadway."
Cole takes "Things We Did Last Summer" as a ballad feature. This CD reissue of a Palo Alto LP (which lives up to its name) adds a brief alternate version of "Art's Opus #2."
