Random Notes On Olympics

-44 million viewers in North America for the Canada-US Olympic Gold Final Hockey game, & the NHL doesn't want to be there in 4 years ! Would somebody just give Gary Bettman his thanks for coming out speech now !

- Dave Letterman said on his show recently that he was kinda hoping for Canada in the gold medal game and Barbara Walters said on the view our national anthem is better than the US, how cool is that ?

-  Local artist Phyllis Grant's Coke bottle was on display during the games, even cooler!

-  Joannie Rochette, great choice for flag bearer at the closing ceremonies.  Her courage in the face of adversity was awe inspiring.

-  Most Gold Medals Evar !  Think I'll pull a George Costanza & end on a high note  Go Canada Go !

Before the Big Time...

This is none other than Ke$ha, doing a not-so-bad rendition of Radiohead at a school function. Enjoy - John.

Back in MY day...

Two things have happened to me in the last couple of months that reminded me I'm not a young man anymore... I became an uncle (Hi Roger!) and I'm starting to use one of those grooming trimmers to get the hair growing out of my ears. (Eww.)

Anyway, this got me thinking about how much things have changed since I was a kid. There's been a few things!

 - If you wanted to make a phone call, you could only go a couple of feet from the wall - that's how long the cord was. To dial the number, you had to put your finger into little holes and spin  - if you had a friend that had 4 zeros in their number, you never called them.

 - In the summertime, you'd  head outside in the morning to play, only coming back around supper when your mom called. And by called, I mean shouted your name down the street.

- If you wanted a drink, you'd turn on the tap in the kitchen and fill your glass. And it was good!

- Video games were 2-D, with three or four colors at best. But you'd still spend hours playing them.

- There were 3 channels on TV. Pliers were an acceptable method for switching between them if the channel knob broke.

- Milk was delivered to your front door, but if you wanted pizza, you had to get it yourself.

That's just a few I can think of right now... what have you noticed is different nowadays? Drop me a note!

Mancakes

Cupcakes have been a growing trend for the past few years. The latest twist: Manly Cupcakes. Watch out for new flavour cupcakes such as Rum & Coke (rum-soaked Madagascar vanilla cake with cola Bavarian cream filling), Beer Run (chocolate beer cake with beer-infused buttercream, topped with crushed pretzels) and The Old-Fashioned (orange-soaked whiskey cake with lemon curd filling). A Toronto bakery, For The Love Of Cake, offers what they call "mancakes", made with beer, whiskey and bacon.

Hey, but I'm still man enough to admit I like the sprinkles and the pink icing.

WAYS TO MAKE QUICK MONEY

It's tax time and we all feel the crunch...

from CouponSherpa.com, here are Quick Ways To Make Money:

1. Human Guinea Pig - you can earn anywhere from $15 to $2,000 for taking part in a clinical research study. The National Institutes of Health lists over 300 clinical studies that need volunteers.
2. Clean Houses - Avoid working for a cleaning agency, where you'll get paid a maximum of $10 per hour. Instead, develop your own client base and put $20 to $30 per hour directly into your pocket.
3. Give Blood - Some plasma banks pay up to $35 per pint.
4. Walk Dogs – StartDogWalking.com explains how to establish and advertise a dog-walking business.
5. Plant Sit

7. House Sit - HouseCareers.com also can help connect you with housesitting jobs.
8. Sell Your Hair - Sales for generous lengths of hair reportedly can net you several hundred to over a thousand dollars. WiseBread.com explains how to sell your hair and includes sites where you can list and market hair.
9. Deliver Phone Books - make anywhere between $7 and $10 per hour.
10. Become a Human Billboard - If you don't mind dressing up like the Statue of Liberty, a chicken or some other mascot, you can earn money standing on a busy corner waving a sign.

Have A Great Weekend,

Mike

The Pope Likes Oasis?

Came across some interesting info over the weekend.  In a bit of a turnabout face the official newspaper of the Vatican L'Osservatore Romano named their top 10 desert Island discs with some pretty interesting results.  Here's the list, no word on if Pope Benedict is actually a fan of these groups but it sure would be cool to se him rocking out to What's The Story Morning Glory!

10.  Supernatural- Carlos Santana
9.  What's The Story Morning Glory- Oasis
8.  Achtung Baby- U2
7.  Graceland- Paul Simon
6.  Thriller- Micheal Jackson
5.  The Nightfly- Donald Fagen
4.  Rumors- Fleetwood Mac
3.  Dark Side of The Moon- Pink Floyd
2. If I Could Only Remember My Name- David Crosby
1. Revolver- The Beatles

Pretty cool choices actually, No Bob Dylan though.  The publication said he was not included because he has paved the way of generations for dilettante singer sonwriters who have " Harshly tested the ears & patience of listeners, thinking that their tortured meanderings might interest somebody"  Ouch.

SEVEN RULES FOR YOUR DOG

Hey all it's Mike... for all you Dog owners, I came across an interesting article from "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Milan, and here are Seven Basic Rules For Your Dog.

1. Create a schedule that includes a daily walk in the morning. This is critical for your dog's health, both physical and mental.
2. Set aside time every day to provide mental exercise by maintaining rules, boundaries, and limitations. When these needs are met, the affection you give to your dog will be channeled as a reward.
3. Always walk out the door ahead of your dog when leaving the house. This will show your dog who is in the leadership role.
4. On walks, make sure that your dog is not in front of you, pulling you down the street. Instead, keep your dog to your side or behind you. This will also demonstrate to your dog that you are the alpha figure.
5. Give your dog something to do before you share food, water, toys, or affection. This way the dog earns his treat. For example, have her perform the Sit or Down command.
6. At bedtime, if your puppy tries to leave her bed, begins to whine, or tries to use chewing as a way to cope with the anxiety of being alone, give her gentle but firm corrections. The puppy's mother set very strict rules for behavior, so she should need very little correction in order to get the point.
7. Create a budget for unexpected circumstances, like medical bills and training classes.
